British Values at Brookmead
At Brookmead School, we are proud to promote the fundamental British Values that help our children become respectful, responsible, and active members of society. These values are woven through everything we do, from our curriculum to our daily school life.
The five key British Values are:
1. Democracy
- We encourage student voice through House Captain elections and meetings
- Children participate in votes on class decisions, helping them understand democratic processes
- Opportunities such as debates, discussions, and voting days are built into the curriculum
- Oracy encourages children to debate and discuss in an appropriate manner
2. The Rule of Law
- We teach the importance of rules through our behaviour policy and clear expectations
- Visits from police officers and other authorities help children understand laws in real life
- We consistently reinforce the reasons behind rules and the consequences of breaking them
3. Individual Liberty
- Pupils are given freedom to make choices in a safe and supportive environment
- We encourage self-expression in lessons like PSHE, art, and through extra-curricular clubs
- Children learn about their rights and responsibilities through the curriculum and assemblies
4. Mutual Respect
- We model respectful behaviour and promote it through our school values
- Staff and pupils celebrate each other’s achievements and differences
- Diversity runs as a golden thread through our curriculum
5. Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
- We teach about a range of faiths in RE and celebrate cultural events from various traditions, including our school trips
- Assemblies and our diverse curriculum promote understanding and acceptance of diversity
- We invite guest speakers and arrange visits to places of worship to deepen knowledge and empathy
By promoting these values, we help our pupils grow into thoughtful, caring individuals who are ready to take their place in modern Britain.
